Connecticut Rivers Council will again offer a BSA BB gun and Range Master Orientation course for all individuals who will be acting as BB gun range officers at a Cub Scout day camp or resident camp. The course will be held at Chip’s Cabin at June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation in Ashford CT on Saturday, 26 June 2010. The class will run from 0830 – 1500. The classroom portion of the course will cover the safety rules for a BB gun range, basic parts of a BB gun, the safe handling of a BB gun, recommended range setup of the shooting positions for Cub Scouts, the running of a BB gun range, a review of “SHOOTING SPORTS for Cub Scouts”, which each participant receives, viewing an instructional video, and a discussion on proper time management on the range. This classroom session follows the format of the “NRA First Steps Rifle Orientation” course by the National Rifle Association. The afternoon session will be spent on the BB gun range where each participant performs the duties of range master, a Cub Scout eager to shoot a BB gun, and den leader. As range master, the participant is evaluated on how he/she presents the various safety rules, and how he/she would handle a disruptive, mentally handicapped, and/or physically handicapped scout. The primary purpose is to learn how to maintain control of the BB gun range and to build self confidence. This certification is valid for two years from the date of the course. The instructors for this course are NRA certified training counselors and rifle instructors who themselves are range safety officers and are involved in the scouting program. At least one of the instructors in also certified as an NRA range safety officer. The cost of the course is $50.
